My 3am Tossing Drove My Husband To The Spare Room. Here's What Finally Fixed It.

A vintage comic panel of a woman in bed telling her husband, pillow under his arm, to sleep in the spare room tonight

I was the one who said it. "Just sleep in the spare room tonight."

Not because he snored. Because of me.

Asleep by half eleven. Wide awake at three. And from then until the alarm, a woman turning over every eight minutes with increasing fury.

He never complained once. He just started keeping a pillow within reach, the way you keep an umbrella by the door in April.

That went on for a year.

The Spare Room Fixes The Wrong Person

Couples rarely give it a name. The magazines call it a "sleep divorce" and it has stopped sounding like a joke.

But here is what I got wrong for that entire year: the spare room is almost never about the relationship. It is about the second half of the night.

Nobody moves out because their partner falls asleep badly. They move out because of what happens between 2am and 5am. The turning. The sighing. The phone glow an inch above the duvet. The effort of lying rigidly still so at least one of you gets to work rested.

And it only helps one of you. I got the whole bed to myself and lay awake in the middle of it.

Everything I Tried Was Aimed At The Wrong Twenty Minutes

Falling asleep was never my problem. Staying asleep was.

Almost everything on the sleep aisle is built for the doorway, not the corridor:

The nightcap that puts you under fast, then fragments the small hours as it wears off. The antihistamine that trades 3am for a concrete head at 7am. The melatonin gummy aimed at a clock that was never the broken part.

One night I was at the kitchen table at ten past three, doing arithmetic about how many hours were left. And I realised the thing I wanted did not exist.

Measured doses. No melatonin. Aimed at the whole night. And it had to not feel like medicine. I did not want to be a patient at 9pm. I wanted to be a person having a warm drink.

So I built it.

Two Mugs On The Counter At Nine

That is what replaced the spare room in our house. Literally two mugs.

One level scoop each. 200ml of off-the-boil water. Ten seconds of stirring into a clear deep-red tea 🍒 Then the two of us sitting down with it while the kettle noise fades.

It is the least dramatic thing we do all day. It is also the one I would defend hardest.

Because the drink is only half of it. The ritual is doing real work too. A shared signal at the same time every evening is how two differently-wired bodies agree the day is finished.

A pill in a cupboard is something you mean to do. Two mugs at 9pm is something you actually do.

What Is Actually In The Mug

I built the label I could never find on a shelf. Every dose printed. Every form named. Nothing hidden in a "proprietary blend".

Magnesium, 200mg as bisglycinate. Not oxide, the poorly absorbed form that fills supermarket tablets. Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Glycine, 3,000mg. The amino acid that gives the drink its body, at a proper measured dose.
L-theanine, 200mg. The one found in green tea, at the amount people actually use.
Ashwagandha, 300mg standardised extract. Debitterised root at 5% withanolides, so it does not taste like a hedge.
Vitamin B6, 2mg. Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Zinc, 14mg as bisglycinate. Contributes to normal cognitive function.

Tart cherry (400mg) and acacia fibre (1,300mg) complete the blend. It is sugar-free, and there is deliberately no melatonin in it, which also means there is nothing to taper off if you stop.

The Hour Seven pouch with every ingredient dose labelled around it

EDITOR'S NOTE: Every pouch pairs with the free Hour Seven app, where Dozy, the sleep coach, reads your night and explains the pattern in plain words. Couples tell us comparing charts over breakfast has become a sport. The app is free for everyone, subscription or not.

The Arithmetic, Since You Will Do It Anyway

A pouch is 30 nights. Two people means two scoops, so we go through it faster than most.

Two pouches on a plan: £83.98 down to £44.99. That is 46% off, and 75p a night. It is the option the page opens on and the one most people start with.

Three pouches on a plan: £125.97 down to £59.99. That is 52% off, and 67p a night, the cheapest the drink ever gets.

After your first order, every order is 37% off. Skip, pause or cancel whenever you like. Prefer to just try one? A single pouch is £39.99, which is £1.33 a night.

Every order ships with the 3D contoured sleep mask free (worth £30) and free UK delivery. Subscribers unlock a gift pack worth £65 or more on top.

And the promise is the one I would want written for me: you have 60 days to change your mind. Contact us in that window and we refund any pouch still sealed.
