How to use one repeatable cue in your evening routine

A repeatable evening routine can begin with one clear connection: when a dependable cue happens, complete one small action. The cue might be finishing the kitchen tidy. The action might be dimming the main lights and reading for ten minutes. Start there before building a long checklist.

What is an evening cue?

A cue is an event or context that tells you it is time to begin a chosen action. Behaviour researchers often describe an implementation intention as an if-then plan that links a situation with a response. In plain language: “When this happens, I will do that.”

A cue does not force behaviour, and habit formation is not instant. It simply makes the starting point less vague. Research on health-related habit formation suggests that cues, repeated performance and planning can support the development of automaticity, but the time and results vary considerably between people and behaviours.

Choose a cue that already belongs to your evening

The strongest practical candidate is usually an event you already notice and control. It should happen on most evenings, including the unremarkable ones.

Cue candidate Why it may work What to check
Finishing the kitchen tidy It has a visible finish and often happens in the same place Does it still happen on late or disrupted evenings?
Closing the laptop after the final task It marks a boundary between work and personal time Is “final task” clearly defined?
An evening phone reminder It happens at a chosen time Will it be noticed without becoming another interruption?
Beginning personal care It already belongs to a familiar sequence Does its timing vary too widely to be useful?
Feeling tired It appears relevant to sleep It can be vague, late or easy to miss, so choose a more observable event

A clock time can work, but a routine-based event may fit variable evenings more naturally. Neither is universally better. Choose the cue you can recognise without a debate.

Attach one action, not the whole ideal evening

The first action should be specific and have a clear finish. “Relax” is difficult to perform because it does not say what to do. “Put my phone on charge outside the bedroom” is observable. “Read five pages” has an end.

Possible actions include:

  • dim the main lights;
  • put tomorrow's essentials in one place;
  • write unfinished tasks on paper and close the notebook;
  • move the phone to its overnight charging place;
  • read a short section of a book;
  • prepare a non-caffeinated drink;
  • prepare Hour Seven according to its label if you have decided it is suitable for you.

The drink is optional. A supplement is not required for an evening cue, does not treat a sleep condition and should not become a reason to ignore persistent sleep problems.

Use the cue-action-record worksheet

1. My cue

When ______________________________ happens, I will begin.

2. My action

Sources

I will ______________________________ for ______ minutes.

3. My setup

Before the evening, I will make this easier by ______________________________.

4. My minimum version

On a disrupted evening, I will still ______________________________.

5. My record

Cue happened: yes / no

Action completed: yes / partly / no

Main interruption: ______________________________

One setup change for tomorrow: ______________________________

Keep the record factual. “Action completed: no” is information about the plan or circumstances, not a judgement about discipline.

Make the action easier before the cue arrives

Do not wait until the cue to discover that the book is missing, the mug is dirty or the charger is in another room. Prepare the environment earlier.

  • Place the object you need where the action will happen.
  • Remove one unnecessary decision.
  • Use a smaller minimum version for late evenings.
  • Reduce competing prompts, such as non-essential notifications.
  • Tell other people in the household what the cue means if their cooperation matters.

If the action repeatedly fails, inspect the design before adding motivation. The cue may be too vague, the action may be too large or the environment may still favour a competing action.

What to do after a missed evening

Restart at the next normal cue. Do not double the routine, extend it as compensation or draw a conclusion about your sleep from the missed action. A practical restart rule is: “If I miss the action, I will use the minimum version at the next cue.”

Research does not support a universal number of days in which a behaviour becomes automatic. A 2024 systematic review found substantial variation across health behaviours and study methods. Treat repetition as a process rather than a countdown.

When to add another step

First make the starting connection easy to repeat. Once the cue and action are stable across ordinary evenings, add only a step that solves a defined problem. For example, if unfinished work keeps pulling you back to the laptop, a two-minute paper task list may be useful. More steps do not automatically create a better routine.

The broader repeatable evening routine guide covers light, screens, caffeine, wake time and a minimum three-step sequence. This guide owns the narrower question of choosing and testing one cue.

Where a prepared drink can fit

If a drink already suits your routine, preparation can be the action after your cue. For Hour Seven, follow the current label and live preparation and suitability information. Do not change the serving to make the action feel more effective.

For a simple preparation comparison, see whether hot or cold preparation fits the environment where your cue happens. Temperature is a preference, not a different routine outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best bedtime cue?

There is no universal best cue. Choose an event that is specific, noticeable, under your control and present on most evenings.

Should the cue happen at the same time every night?

Consistency can help, but an event-based cue may still be useful when clock times vary. The important point is that you can recognise it and connect it to the same small action.

How long does it take to form an evening habit?

There is no reliable universal deadline. Studies show wide variation by person, behaviour, context and method. Focus on making the action repeatable rather than counting towards a guaranteed habit date.

Can the cue be making Hour Seven?

Preparation is normally the action rather than the cue. Link it to an earlier event, such as finishing the kitchen tidy. Only use the product if suitable and follow its current directions.

What if the cue happens but I ignore it?

Reduce the action to its minimum version and change the setup. If the cue is repeatedly unnoticed or arrives at an impractical time, replace it with a more dependable event.

I fall asleep fine. It is staying asleep that I struggle with.

That is exactly what Hour Seven is built around. Most sleep products are aimed at the first thirty minutes of the night.

This one is made for the whole night. It is a magnesium drink taken at the same time every evening. Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

I have tried magnesium before and felt nothing.

Check which type of magnesium you took. Most supermarket tablets use magnesium oxide, and comparatively little of it is absorbed. Chalky tablets are also easy to give up on.

Your body cannot make magnesium, so all of it has to come from what you eat. British men average 91% of the recommended intake and women 80%, and around one in eight adults falls below the level considered adequate at all, according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Hour Seven uses 200mg of magnesium as bisglycinate. That is magnesium bound to glycine, which is gentler on the stomach and easier to keep taking as a drink. The type is printed on the back of every pack.

How many nights before I notice anything?

It varies, and it varies a lot. Some people say they notice something the first night, and for others it takes a few weeks. Your age, your routine and how much magnesium you were already getting all play a part.

What shifts an evening is repeating it, not any single night. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Give it two to three months of nightly use before you judge it.

The companion app plots your nights, so you get your own answer instead of ours.

Will it leave me groggy in the morning?

There is no melatonin and no sedative in the pouch. Nothing in Hour Seven works by sedating you.

It is 200mg of magnesium as bisglycinate with the NightSync™ blend. You drink it at the end of your evening, as the last step of a routine rather than as a sleeping pill.

Can I take it every night?

That is how it is meant to be used. One 7g scoop each evening at the same hour, night after night, because the routine is the product.

Two paid deliveries minimum, then skip, pause or cancel. Approved first-order trial refunds release the remaining minimum. Hour Seven is a food supplement, not a sedative.

What if Hour Seven is not for me?

One-time purchases have 60 days from delivery. For new subscriptions, the first-order trial ends 60 days after delivery or at the second successful payment, whichever comes first.

If you are not sleeping more deeply, contact help@hourseven.com before that deadline for a full refund. Opened and part-used pouches are included. An approved first-order trial refund releases the remaining minimum and cancels future payments. Claims submitted in time, earlier purchase terms and statutory rights are unaffected.

Someone here had your night

5 out of 5 stars

I stopped mentioning the 3am thing to people because there is nothing they can say. You just lie there doing sums.

Four weeks in, last week I woke twice, both times before midnight, both times went back off. My husband noticed before I did.

Rachel M., Mother of 3

5 out of 5 stars

I track everything, so I went in expecting nothing. First fortnight, nothing worth reporting.

Weeks three and four my deep sleep average went from 48 minutes to 71, and the week before my period stopped being the write-off it normally is. I have the graphs. That is the only reason I am still buying it.

Priya K., Pharmacologist

5 out of 5 stars

The week before my period I would wake at 3 and be furious about it. Not sad. Furious.

It is a nightly thing now, hot, same mug, and the fury has gone somewhere. I am not claiming it fixed my cycle. I am claiming I sleep through it.
