Clear doses. Cautious claims. Sources you can check.

Four ingredients, without borrowed certainty

Research on one ingredient cannot prove the effect of a finished multi-ingredient product. Study populations, doses, extracts and outcomes differ.

Glycine ingredient illustration

Glycine

Two small human studies examined 3g before bedtime. One used sleep recordings in volunteers with unsatisfactory sleep; another studied next-day fatigue during partial sleep restriction. Both are useful signals, but neither is large enough to establish a dependable sleep outcome.

L-theanine ingredient illustration

L-theanine

A 2025 review included 19 articles reporting randomised trials with 897 participants and found small improvements in some subjective sleep outcomes. The authors also found too few studies of pure L-theanine to settle the best dose or duration. A separate 30-person crossover trial studied 200mg daily for four weeks.

Magnesium

A 2025 placebo-controlled trial in 155 adults reporting poor sleep found a small improvement after four weeks of 250mg elemental magnesium as bisglycinate. A 2021 review found only three older-adult trials and rated the evidence low to very low quality. Separately, magnesium has authorised UK nutrient-function claims, which is not the same as a claim to treat insomnia.

Ashwagandha root ingredient illustration

Ashwagandha

A 2021 review of five randomised trials involving 400 adults found a small overall sleep effect and called for more long-term safety data. A separate 2020 placebo-controlled trial used a standardised 120mg extract in 150 adults for six weeks. Extract, dose and duration vary, so results should not be transferred automatically to every formula.

One Hour Seven serving contains 3,000mg glycine, 200mg L-theanine, 200mg elemental magnesium as magnesium bisglycinate and 300mg ashwagandha root extract. The finished formula has not been clinically tested to diagnose or treat a sleep disorder.

The links above include two sources for each ingredient and identify the study type, participant count or evidence limitation where the source reports it. The NIH magnesium fact sheet provides additional background on magnesium forms and intake.

Seven questions before choosing a magnesium drink

Use the label, the full formula and the real routine to make the comparison.

  1. How much elemental magnesium is in one serving?Do not confuse it with the total compound weight.
  2. Which magnesium form is used? The form should be named clearly.
  3. Is every active ingredient quantified?Exact amounts are easier to assess than an unexplained proprietary blend.
  4. Are the claims proportionate?Be cautious with promises to cure insomnia or work for everyone.
  5. Is the routine realistic?Consider taste, preparation and whether you prefer a drink or capsules.
  6. Are warnings and company details easy to find?Check age guidance, cautions, contact details and returns.
  7. Is the real value clear?Compare cost per serving and recheck delivery and subscription terms at checkout.

Hour Seven states 200mg elemental magnesium as magnesium bisglycinate per serving, with 30 servings in a 210g pouch. Read the NIH magnesium fact sheet.

Read a food supplement label without the hype

Start with serving size and servings per pack. Then distinguish the elemental mineral amount from the compound used to deliver it. NRV means Nutrient Reference Value. It gives context for vitamins and minerals, but it is not a performance score.

Read beyond the headline ingredients. Flavourings, sweeteners, fibre and processing aids may matter for suitability. Check the daily maximum, storage, age limits, medication cautions, pregnancy and breastfeeding advice.

Claims should remain specific. Saying that magnesium contributes to normal nervous-system function should not be stretched into a promise to treat a sleep disorder. Natural does not mean risk-free, and evidence on an individual ingredient does not prove the outcome of a finished blend.

Finally, look for a responsible business, contact route, clear policies and a product description that matches the current pack.
